A mere 12 hundredths of a second separated Cape Motorsports’ Anthony Martin from Juncos Racing’s Victor Franzoni after 30mins of qualifying the first race in Pro Mazda’s double-header.
The result brings Martin pole on his series debut, setting a lap time of 1min13.6718sec to Franzoni’s 1min13.6838. But for Franzoni, too, this was a commendable achievement, as the Brazilian had been expecting a fourth season in USF2000 until getting called up by Juncos this week.
This pair were four and five tenths ahead of last year’s dominant squad, Team Pelfrey, for whom TJ Fischer and Carlos Cunha will line up third and fourth.
Phillippe Denes will start fifth for World Speed Motorsports with the third Pelfrey entry of Nikita Lastochkin in sixth.
