SOUTH Australian young guns Matt Meaney and Sam Magarey lead a strong local contingent in the Australian Youth Sailing Championships at the Adelaide Sailing Club this week, heading into the final two days of racing in fourth overall.

The pair, who sail out of the Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club, are currently matching it with some of the best young talent in the 420 class from right around the country following a third place at the recent open national championship earlier this month.

Local sparring partners Alex Higgins and Joal Mackenzie, who also sail out of Brighton and Seacliff, are sitting sixth overall and are right in the mix heading into the final two days of racing.

A number of other South Australians are competing in the championships with four more teams in the 420 class, as well as five sailors in the single-handed Laser class.

The regatta also acts as a qualifying event for the Youth World Championships, which will be held in Israel in July this year.
