ORLANDO – At the exact minute free agency started Saturday — 12:01 a.m. — point guard Ron Baker announced on Twitter he re-signed with the Knicks.
The move was very much expected from the restricted free agent, who became a favorite of Jeff Hornacek and was attending Summer League practices in Orlando despite not being on the roster.
“We hope he’s back,” Hornacek said.
Baker went undrafted last year out of Wichita State, and only took a roster spot because Chasson Randle broke his orbital bone in training camp. By mid-January, he became part of the rotation and was starting games at the end of the season.
Baker, 24, averaged 4.1 points and 2.1 assists in 16.5 minutes as a rookie. More impressive to the Knicks, however, was his commitment to defense.
