Jordan Taylor has expressed a cautious interest in testing either an Indy car or stock car, should the right opportunity arise.
Jordan’s older brother Ricky got the chance to test the Team Penske Indy car of reigning champion Simon Pagenaud in a January test at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Although there’s no reason to suspect either Taylor brother would abandon their successful day job as IMSA prototype drivers, both seem interested in testing new waters. A few weeks after winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Jordan was back at the track for NASCAR’s season-opening Daytona 500 as a guest of SimCraft.
The question is, was the 25-year-old there just to enjoy some restrictor plate racing, or more?
“There’s no plans for (a test), but I’d definitely be happy to give it a try … either Indy car or stock car,” he told Motorsport.com. “I’ve always said it has to be the right situation. I don’t think there’s a good reason to jump into a car that’s not going to be competitive. I don’t think it will look good for anyone. If it happened to come up, I’d love to give it a try. Obviously the Penske test for Ricky was huge … it’s hard to beat Team Penske, so he’s already set the bar high.
“There’s no plans, but it’s good to just be here in the paddock and get my face in front of new people and you know, maybe start some conversation.”
Plate racing at Daytona is a far cry from the annual 24-hour endurance race at the same speedway, yet Jeff Gordon has mastered both. Jordan spoke to his Rolex 24 teammate about the details of plate racing and what it takes to master the draft at a superspeedway.
“It’s unique. it’s nothing like what I’ve experienced … there are so many challenges that we don’t have to face in sports cars.”
As for his usual ride behind the wheel of the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R, there’s no reason to think Taylor can’t followup their Daytona triumph with another ‘W’ at Sebring.
“I think we have a good shot. The car is obviously new, but we proved at Daytona that it is reliable, durable and fast. We went to test at Sebring and were quickest overall, so the car’s quick. We did have a BoP change that slowed us down a little bit, but I think we’re still there.”
And the early indication shows that he’s right on the mark with Cadillac drivers going 1-2-3 in the second practice session on Thursday.
Best shot yet to win Sebring
Although Gordon is busy on the broadcasting side with Fox Sports, WTR have a very capable third driver with them for Sebring in Alex Lynn.
“We got Alex Lynn (and) he fit right in with us. We got three strong drivers. We’re going to Sebring with the best shot we’ve ever had there.”
Along with a GP3 title and multiple wins in Formula 2 (formally GP2), Lynn has served as a Williams F1 test driver and raced an Oreca 05 Nissan LMP2 for Manor in the WEC.
“There was a long list of drivers that we were talking to, and he was right at the top of it,” explained Taylor. “He has experience in high-downforce cars and cars like this … so it’s good to have his feedback.”
