J.R. Smith and his wife, Jewel Harris, announced on Saturday the birth of their daughter Dakota, who they said arrived five months early and weighs just one pound.
The couple shared the difficult news in a video posted to Uninterrupted, the online video platform created by Smith’s Cavaliers teammate LeBron James.
“We know we’re not the only family going through this, who has been through this or will ever go through it,” Harris said. “That’s why we decided to share what we’ve been going through with you guys. Please keep us in your prayers, and we’ll do the same for everybody else.”
Smith has been out since Dec. 21 with a right thumb injury, which required surgery and will keep the Cleveland guard sidelined for an expected total of three months.
The couple, who married in August, announced the pregnancy in a video also posted to Uninterrupted in October.
Various athletes and celebrities answered the request for prayers on Twitter.
