Horse Racing: It’s Somewhat holds on for win in the Doncaster Mile.
AS It’s Somewhat started to open up a lead, his trainer John O’Shea didn’t know what to think.
“We had been having a pretty ordinary day to be fair,’’ the Godolphin trainer said. “I was watching the race with Daz (Darren Beadman) and when he shot clear we looked at each other and thought should we cheer yet.’’
O’Shea and Beadman then broke out in a chorus of cheering as It’s Somewhat managed a rare feat of leading throughout to win the Group 1 $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
It’s Somewhat ($31) gave O’Shea a third Doncaster win when he held off a gallant Happy Clapper ($7) to win by a half length with Sense Of Occasion ($61) more than three lengths away third.
One punter was laughing after the upset victory, after his $10 outlay netted him almost $120,000. The punter correctly selected the First 4 by boxing (It’s Somewhat/Happy Clapper/Sense Of Occasion and Palentino). The dividend was a whopping $283,840. The punter’s small investment netted 41.66 per cent of the dividend to gve him $118,247.
Favourite Le Romain ($4.80) did strike trouble at the top of the straight but still produced an out-of-character effort to finish only 15th,.
O’Shea had won the Doncaster with his champions Private Steer (2004) and Racing To Win (2006) but It’s Somewhat’s effort was an unexpected triumph.
“It’s Somewhat had a good preparation going into the race and we felt on his work this week that he was a genuine top four chance,’’ O’Shea said.
“But this is a Doncaster – they are not easy to win. We knew It’s Somewhat was very fit, he could lead and get through the ground, and he’s a tough horse.’’
Zac Purton, the expatriate jockey who know calls Hong Kong home, rated It’s Somewhat perfeclyt in front to claim his second Doncaster after his 2014 win on Sacred Falls.
“These are great races to win and luckily enough the boys prepared the horse really well for me and he’s done the rest. It was a good tough effort,’’ Purton said.
“It’s been hard to make up ground today so I went back and looked at his race when he won here over 2000m and I really liked the way he used his action.
“John said to me earlier in the day do you want to be positive and I said yes. He said good he’s fit.
“The plan wasn’t necessarily to lead but I got there comfortably and I just let him bowl along so it worked out well.
“In Sydney most of the races are run at pretty slow tempos, and when you roll along a little bit more you take a gamble, but I’ll always back myself. If you win it’s great and if you lose well at least you lose trying.”

O’Shea said it was likely It’s Somewhat would spearhead his Brisbane winter carnival assault.
“We’ll probably just stick with what we were going to do, go to Queensland for the Hollindale and the Doomben Cup,’’ the trainer said.
“He’s going there on fresh legs, second up today and hopefully he can pick up something else up there.’’
Happy Clapper has now run second in successive Doncasters after chasing home the mighty Winx last year.
“The other horse got the soft lead but it looked like he would go past him,’’ said Happy Clapper’s trainer Pat Webster.
“Yes it is hard to take but the horse ran well.
“We’ll see how he pulls up but we’ll get him ready for the 2000m of the Queen Elizabeth and go again next week.’’
