Before Mark Ruffalo took on the role of brilliant scientist Bruce Banner, also known as Hulk and The Incredible Hulk, the Marvel character played a leading role in two superhero movies. Ruffalo redefined the character, first battling with Thor in The Avengers and then fighting with Iron Man in Avengers: Age of Ultron before ultimately siding with the heroes to help them defeat their mighty foes.
Although he was absent from Captain America: Civil War, he will play a very prominent role in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. Still, fans have cried out for a solo adventure and for good reason. As our own Chris Clow noted: “The Hulk is one of Marvel’s absolute best characters for a lot of great reasons, and if he can make the team-up films all the more engaging, it’s high time that the character earned a new solo adventure once more.”
Now Ruffalo has shed light on Marvel’s plans for the character. In a new interview with Cinema Blend, he says that he talked with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige: “Basically, Kevin [Feige] pulled me aside before this, and said, ‘If you were gonna do a… if we were going to do a standalone Hulk movie, what would it be?’
“And I said, ‘I think it should be this, this, this, and this and this, and ends up like this.’ And he’s like, ‘I love that. Why don’t we do that in the next three movies, starting with Thor 3 and then we go into Avengers 3 and 4.’ And I was like, ‘That sounds great!’ And so we are at the beginning of this arc.”
Critics have already cited the character as a big attraction in Thor: Ragnarok. “Hulk is once again the scene-stealer,” says Eric Eisenberg of /Film, “and a lot of it is that he can finally talk. Great to see him back on the big screen.” All of this sounds like a very promising start for a Hulk trilogy in disguise.
That raises our anticipation even higher for Thor: Ragnarok, which opens in theaters on November 3. We look forward to seeing how Hulk’s new story and character arc is developed further in Avengers: Infinity War, due out on May 4, 2018, and the fourth, untitled Avengers movie, scheduled for release on May 3, 2019.
