Daytona 24 Hours: Hr17 – The battle tightens as the sun rises

The Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona is shaping up to be a thrilling race as daylight returns.

The field continued to ride under caution for the first half of this hour and thankfully, the yellow flag did not return for the 30 minutes that followed.

The No. 5 Action Express Cadillac has returned to the front with a vengeance, once again the race leader after falling off the lead lap during the mid-portion of the race. There are three other prototypes still in the fight with Wayne Taylor Racing second, Visit Florida Racing third and the No. 2 Tequila Patron ESM machine fourth.

As the hour came to a close, Ricky Taylor was all over Filipe Albuquerque with ideas of stealing away the race lead.

Porsche has pushed back against Ford, retaking the top two positions in the running order with the No. 912 leading the No. 911. Richard Lietz is piloting the lead car and runs fifth overall.

Jeroen Bleekemolen has control of the GTD class for the Riley Motorsports –Team AMG Mercedes. The two Michael Shank Racing Acuras are on the hunt in second and third, giving an impressive showing this entire race.

In Prototype Challenge, it’s the status quo with Performance Tech still comfortably ahead of the No. 20 BAR1 entry.

As for the weather, the rain has not yet left the speedway, but it will fade as 10am, ET. approaches and the track should be dry for the finish.
