Set for theatrical release on May 31, 2019, the first official images from Godzilla: King of the Monsters have been revealed. But what about the monstrous confrontation that will be featured in 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong? “It’s not like we’re bending over backwards to introduce Kong, but there’s definitely some bread crumbs,” director Michael Dougherty told EW.
More bread crumbs are already accumulating. Let’s round up what we know about Godzilla vs. Kong so far.
Who will star?
Danai Gurira is in early talks to star, according to Deadline. The report also claims that the actress is “circling” a role in the next Star Trek film, to be directed by S.J. Clarkson.
Gurira broke out big on TV smash The Walking Dead and then made an indelible impression as military leader Okoye, first in Black Panther and then in Avengers: Infinity War. If things work out, she would definitely make a powerful, charismatic lead in Godzilla vs. Kong. Watch a deleted scene from Black Panther below for a reminder of her dramatic talents.
Millie Bobby Brown (Netflix’s Stranger Things) will also star, per Deadline. She will be reprising her role from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as will Kyle Chandler (Peter Jackson’s King Kong) and Ziyi Zhang (The Cloverfield Paradox). As previously reported, the cast will also include Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2) and Van Marten (Avengers: Infinity War).
Do we know anything about the plot?
Beyond the obvious — two giant monsters will battle — we haven’t heard anything specific. It’s likely that we won’t hear anything more about its particular plot or characters until after the release of Godzilla: King of the Monsters next year.
Who is directing?
Adam Wingard, whose credits include You’re Next, The Guest, Blair Witch and Death Note. Last year, he teased: “It’s a massive monster brawl movie. There’s lots of monsters going crazy on each other, but at the end of the day I want there to be an emotional drive to it. I want you to be emotionally invested in them.”
When can we see it?
Godzilla vs. Kong is scheduled for release on May 22, 2020.
