Do you have a craving for more creepy horror movies from the Conjuring franchise? Well, The Nun is coming to satisfy your habit — pun intended. This one is a prequel spin-off of the first Conjuring sequel (pictured above), as we were introduced to the “Demon Nun” Valak in the 2016 release The Conjuring 2. And it’s being sold as its “darkest chapter.”
With only a few months left until the release of The Nun, Warner Bros. has unleashed a poster and will share the first trailer later this week. Check out the one-sheet, which will look great on the wall of your bedroom, provided you’re interested in having nightmares every night. Then check out everything we know about the movie down below.
When does The Nun take place in the Conjuring franchise timeline?
This movie is set in 1952, which makes it 25 years ahead of the plot of The Conjuring 2, which is where we first met Valak, the “Demon Nun.” And it’s seven years after the main events of the prequel installment Annabelle: Creation, which is where we last saw Valak — of course, that was in a 1952-set postscript.
What is the plot of the movie?
The Nun follows the investigation into a mysterious suicide by a nun in Romania, as the Vatican sends a priest “with a haunted past” and a young nun just finishing her vows to discover what happened. Of course, Valak, the “Demon Nun” is somehow involved and haunting the newly introduced characters. According to the official synopsis:
Together [the priest and young nun] uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in The Conjuring 2, as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.
Who stars in The Nun?
Character actress Bonnie Aarons is reprising her role as Valak, the “Demon Nun,” while Taissa Farmiga follows in her sister Vera’s footsteps by joining the franchise as Sister Irene, presumably the nun from the Vatican. Oscar-nominated actor Demián Bichir, last seen in Alien: Covenant, plays the priest. The movie also features Jonas Bloquet (Elle), as a local villager, plus Charlotte Hope (Game of Thrones) and Ingrid Bisu (Toni Erdmann) as nuns of the order being investigated.
Who is the director?
Corin Hardy, who directed the 2015 horror movie The Hallow, is at the helm of The Nun.
Who wrote the screenplay?
Gary Dauberman, who wrote the Annabelle movies within the Conjuring franchise and co-wrote It and its upcoming sequel, penned the script based on a story conceived by himself and series producer (and its original director) James Wan.
When does it come out?
The Nun arrives in theaters on September 7.
