A Look at the Political Statements Being Made at NYFW

This fashion season, opportunities for political commentary have been ripe for the picking and designers are making their stance known through their runway collections, choice of soundtrack, and more. Here, the most powerful statements made at shows during NYFW.

Expressing a position of unity and equality, a t-shirt at Creatures of Comfort read “We Are All Human Beings.”

Slogans were a prime choice for designers looking to make a statement. At Public School, models went down the runway wearing clothes with the phrase “We Need Leaders” and “Feminist AF” and hats that turned Trump’s campaign slogan on its head. (Those hats also read “44 1/2″… wishful thinking?)

Gypsy Sport

Following a politically charged speech by designer Rio Uribe, the show continued the message about the plight of refugees with tents along the runways and a music performance given by a family of drummers who play in the subways.

Christian Siriano used a slogan tee to convey his message as well, sending a model down the runway wearing a t-shirt that read “People are People”—proceeds from the shirt, available to purchase now, benefit the ACLU.

Cushnie et Ochs

At Cushnie et Ochs, the soundtrack was key. The music played during the show featured empowering messages in its lyrics such as “The Future is Female.”
